I need an eFoil

6 efoil tricks to master By David Trewern

Rail Grab

Ride Slalom

Rail Grab

A man e foiling

How to do it:

  • Start at a moderate speed (~25 km/h), with your back foot over the mast. Practice gentle heel-side turns and get used to grabbing the rail with your back hand.
  • As you gain confidence, increase your speed (30–35 km/h) and lean deeper into your turns. Once you can hold a steady carve, push harder mid-turn to briefly breach the wing tip above the surface — just the tip, or you'll crash.
  • When you're nailing the breach, add the rail grab for bonus style points. Higher speeds help keep you stable and avoid stalling.

Jump

Ride Slalom

Rail Grab

A man on the electric jet board

How to do it:

  • Build speed, shift weight slightly back, then push hard with your rear foot while lifting the front. As you launch, shift your weight forward to stay balanced in the air.
  • Bend your knees on landing to absorb impact, and keep pressure on your front foot to stay foiling after touchdown.
  • Pro tip: Time your jump with oncoming swell for more height — speed and timing are everything!

Ride Unpowered

A man on a jet board on a wave

How to do it:

  • Ride at a steady speed and lean into your first turn, staying high enough to avoid touching down.
  • Alternate between toe-side and heel-side turns to create consistent S-shapes on the water.
  • Keep your movements fluid, shift your weight smoothly, and focus on maintaining momentum.
  • Mastering slalom builds the muscle memory you’ll need for more advanced maneuvers.

Ride Unpowered

Ride Unpowered

Ride Unpowered

A man in the water riding the eFoil

How to do it:

  • Find a gentle wave away from shore and other riders. Ride the crest, gradually ease off the throttle, and once the wave takes over, cut the motor.
  • Shift your weight forward to maintain glide, and steer with smooth side-to-side body movement.
  • Larger wings work best — try different setups to find your perfect flow.

Sit Down

Ride Unpowered

Boat Start

How to do it:

  • Start at a low speed and gently lower yourself to sit on the board, with your legs hanging just above the water.
  • Balance at a steady height, then lift and fold one leg at a time, keeping your weight centered.
  • Stay upright and make small weight adjustments to maintain control.

Boat Start

Ride Unpowered

Boat Start

How to do it:

  • Sit on the dock/boat, holding the Flite Controller. Gently throttle the motor and hop onto the board, shifting your weight forward.
  • Adjust your balance as the board accelerates and lifts off the water.
  • This trick is all about coordination and confidence, getting you on the water smoothly and with style.

BEGINNER GUIDE

Riding an eFoil for the First Time.

An eFoil is a board with a hydrofoil and electric motor that lifts you out of the water as you ride. The key to riding is balance, control, and using the throttle to power the motor while staying stable on the board.

Before you hit the water, make sure you have the following equipment:

  • Helmet: Always wear a helmet for safety.
  • Life Jacket: Essential for flotation, especially if you're a beginner.
  • Wetsuit: Depending on the weather and water temperature, a wetsuit might be needed for comfort and protection.
  • Controller: The remote control for your eFoil that adjusts speed.

Your instructor or guide will show you how to:

  • Turn on the eFoil board and Controller.
  • Use the Controller to gradually increase speed.
  • Understand basic movements like steering and balancing on the board.

  • Begin in shallow water: Find a safe area with calm water and start in a place where the water is waist-deep, so you can practice getting on the board easily.
  • Throttle gently: Start by giving a small amount of throttle with the Flite Controller. Don’t worry about going fast — focus on controlling your balance first.
  • Standing position: Stand on the board with your feet shoulder-width apart, your knees slightly bent, and your weight centered. Keep your body upright and relaxed.

  • Start with the board flat on the water: Focus on staying balanced and upright as the motor starts to gently lift the board out of the water.
  • Keep your weight centered: Slightly lean forward to avoid the board’s nose from rising too high out of the water. Shift your weight back slightly if the board starts to dive.
  • Small adjustments: Small shifts in your body weight (like adjusting your torso) will help you maintain stability as you ride.

  • Lean to turn: To turn left or right, gently lean your body in the direction you want to go. Your eFoil will respond by turning in that direction.
  • Practice carving: Once you’re comfortable, practice carving by shifting your body weight from side to side, like you would on a snowboard or skateboard.

  • Increase throttle: Slowly push the throttle to increase speed and lift the eFoil board out of the water.
  • Find the sweet spot: As the board lifts, shift your weight forward slightly to maintain balance and avoid falling off. Keep your body relaxed to make quick adjustments.

  • Start slow: Once you're comfortable with the eFoil lifting you, gradually increase the speed to find a comfortable pace.
  • Turning: For sharper turns, you can lean your body more, but avoid leaning too hard too soon, as this can cause you to lose balance. Practice gentle turns before trying anything sharp.

  • Don't panic: Falling is part of the learning process! If you fall off, simply let go of the Flite Controller and relax. The board will stop, and you can swim back to it.
  • Getting back on: Once you're back at the board, sit on it and carefully place your feet back on the board. Use the controller to gently accelerate and get back to speed.

  • Build your confidence: As you gain more experience, you can start to ride for longer periods, try more advanced tricks, and even experiment with carving or jumping.
  • Take it slow: Don't rush! Take your time, enjoy the process, and practice regularly to build muscle memory and control.
