Navigating the Waters of eFoiling Regulations

As one of the most exciting new watersports to emerge in recent years, eFoiling offers an unparalleled sense of freedom and innovation. However, like any groundbreaking activity, it comes with its own set of challenges—particularly when it comes to navigating the complex and sometimes unclear laws that govern its use.

At the Canadian eFoil Association, we understand that these uncertainties can be a barrier for new and experienced riders alike. Regulations surrounding eFoiling, including areas like waterway access, safety requirements, and environmental impact, can vary widely and may leave many riders unsure of their rights and responsibilities.

That’s why we are working closely with organizations like Transport Canada to advocate for clear, consistent, and fair regulations. Our goal is to ensure that everyone—whether you're a beginner or a seasoned eFoiler—can enjoy this incredible sport with confidence and peace of mind.

Together, we’re committed to paving the way for a future where eFoiling is not just accessible, but celebrated across Canada’s breathtaking waterways.

  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your board, remote, and battery are fully charged, securely attached, and functioning properly.
  • Wear the Right Safety Equipment:
    - PFD (Personal Flotation Device) – Required by law in most provinces. Helmet – Recommended for beginners or if you're riding in rocky or busy areas. Wetsuit – Not just for warmth — it adds a layer of protection.
  • Know the Conditions: Check the weather, wind, water temperature, and boat traffic before heading out.
  • Learn the Rules: Understand local laws, especially speed zones, marine traffic rules, and boating regulations.

  • Keep a Safe Distance: Stay at least 30–50 metres from other people, docks, swimmers, and boats.
  • Start Slow: Practice in open, calm water before heading into busier or more technical areas.
  • Be Visible: Bright gear and a flag on your board can help others see you.
  • Use a Tether/Kill Switch: If you fall off, your board will shut off immediately — essential for safety.
